What Grados is for

Grados is a free tool, with no account needed, for studying modal and jazz harmony. Pick a tonic and a scale (major, minor or one of the seven modes) and see every degree with its seventh chord, the available tensions and the notes to avoid, all with sound.

The chord-scale of each degree comes from shifting the source scale; a tension is available if it sits a whole step above the chord tone below it, and if it sits a half step above it is an avoid note. Chords use American notation: C, D♭, F♯, CMaj7, Dm7, G7.

To start, pick a tonic and a mode in the form above and press Start. Dorian is a good first mode: it sounds minor, with the major sixth as its characteristic note. If you already know the major scale, compare it with Dorian and Mixolydian on the same tonic and listen for the note that changes.

How it works

  1. Choose the scale

The root (C, D♭, F♯…) and whether it is Major, Minor or one of the seven modes. You can change it any time with the dropdowns at the top.

  2. Look at each degree

Each degree shows its chord (for example Fm7), its chord scale, the available tensions and the avoid notes. The Modal center and Characteristic tags mark the chords that define the mode. Tap a degree to see its details.

  3. Nothing plays by itself

Sound only starts when you press a play button: Chord, Arpeggio, Scale, Block or the ▶ on a chord in the progression.

  4. Try the tensions

Select one or more tensions and press Chord or Arpeggio to hear the full chord with them. Avoid notes can be selected too, so you can compare.

  5. Build a progression

“Add” stores the chord with the selected tensions. On each chord you can change its tensions from the menu, drag it to reorder, hear it with ▶ and copy the whole progression with “Copy”.

  6. The piano

It shows only the notes of the chosen scale, with the tonic and the characteristic note marked.

  7. On mobile

Use the tabs at the bottom: Scale, Chords, Progression and Settings (language, sound, volume and theme).
